Sitting right at the top of the topclick family tree is Miles Cottrell, our founder and Managing Director. He founded the company back in 2003 and has over 20 years of digital experience and knowledge.
How did the creation of topclick come about?
I started working in the internet game in 1998, with a financial services clients. It was at this time I saw there was a huge gap in the market: that many traditional marketing agencies existed and were delivering their services, but not in a way that gives their clients true value and helps them grow. While the traditional marketing method was the industry norm, I saw an opportunity to utilise the new medium of Pay-Per-Click (PPC) and decided to help one of my contacts with their PPC marketing. From here, topclick was born. One of our key principles upon creation was to be customer centric, and it remains a core value to this day. We must be doing something right – as we’re still going strong nearly 20 years later!
What does a standard day for the Managing Director include?
A standard day for the Managing Director is very busy, and never the same! I’m constantly checking emails to keep our lines of communication open with clients, while also helping to manage and delegate the workloads of some of my key members of staff. There is always a meeting to attend, be that with a client or members of my team. I also work alongside the accounts department to manage topclick’s financial activity.
What is your favourite project you’ve worked on?
Over the years I’ve been involved in a lot of projects, all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed. One of the best parts about my job is that we get to work with such a wide variety of clients which means it’s never boring – there is always a new industry to explore and a new client to help grow. One of my careers highlights would have to be when I travelled around the United Kingdom hosting roadshows, which involved me talking to small and medium sized businesses about the benefits of having a web presence and working with Google. I really enjoyed this and have some amazing memories.
What was your first job and what did it teach you about what you do today?
After leaving college and spending some time travelling the globe, my first job was working as an Assistant Software Editor for a publishing company. It was here that I realised my dream was to work for myself and run a business of my own. And so that’s exactly what I did – founding topclick after having only ever worked for two companies. This is something I am definitely proud of!
Where do you get your motivation and inspiration from?
As cliché as it sounds, my inspiration and motivation both personally and professionally comes from my family and friends. They are constantly inspiring me to push myself every day, to come up with new creative ideas that can improve the way we’re working. With their support I’ve been able to push past my boundaries to achieve my best work.
Where would we most likely find you outside of work?
When I’m not hard at work, I enjoy keeping active by playing football (even despite my broken toes this week!!) and going boxing. I also have two young boys which, as you could imagine, keep me very busy!
